Essential Oils are essential

Have you ever met anyone who hasn’t had back pain or any other type of pain in one time of their life?
I sure haven’t.

Pain is a sign, just like a warning light in your car. While most people chose to get the car checked and fixed when it comes to pain in their body many people try to ignore it or use a "band aid" but don't heal/fix the cause. They just put a sticker over the warning light and pretend it is not there. That this can't be a long term solution is obvious.

When looking at essential oils for back pain you want to find oils that will address these core issues:
  1. Oils for immediate pain relief
  2. Oils for inflammation reduction
  3. Oils to relax muscles and eliminate the spasms
  4. Oils for increased circulation to facilitate quicker healing
  5. Oils that heal and rebuild the damaged tissue

Pain experts have divided the physical causes of pain into two types: nociceptive and neuropathic pain. The differences are important for understanding the nature of the pain problem and especially for determining how to treat the pain.

So find out what type of pain you are dealing with and then support your body's healing ability.

Nociceptive Pain

Nociceptors are the nerves which sense and respond to parts of the body which suffer from damage. They signal tissue irritation, impending injury, or actual injury. When activated, they transmit pain signals (via the peripheral nerves as well as the spinal cord) to the brain. The pain is typically well localized, constant, and often with an aching or throbbing quality.
Visceral pain is the sub-type of nociceptive pain that involves the internal organs. It tends to be episodic and poorly localized.

NOCICEPTIVE = Tissue Damage
– Somatic
  • broken or fractured bones
  • bruises
  • burns
  • cuts
  • inflammation (from infection or arthritis)
  • sprains
  • connective tissues and muscles

– Visceral
  • Organs (heart, liver,
    pancreas, etc.)

Neuropathic Pain

This type of pain is caused by a problem with one or more nerves themselves. The function of the nerve is affected in a way that it sends pain messages to the brain. Neuropathic pain is often described as burning, stabbing, shooting, aching, or like an electric shock.

What causes neuropathic pain?
In the current science of medical research, various conditions can affect nerves and may cause neuropathic pain as one of the features of the condition.

NEUROPATHIC = Nerve Damage
  • Alcoholism
  • Phantom limb pain following an amputation
  • Back, leg, hip problems
  • Chemotherapy
  • Diabetes (Diabetic neuropathy)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Shingles (Postherpetic neuralgia)
  • Spine surgery
  • Trigeminal neuralgia.
  • Cancer.
  • Atypical facial pain
  • Various other uncommon nerve disorders

Other pain relieving Essential Oils

Wintergreen

Picture
Wintergreen – This smell is what you always smell in Ben-Gay or Icy-Hot. It’s a topical aspirin. That smell comes from a component called methyl salicylate. I know, I know it’s a big word. But this component has strong pain relieving properties and is a chemically synthesized ingredient in popular muscle pain relieving medications. However the natural version is so much better!

White Fir

Picture
White Fir – It is a powerful antioxidant and has historically been used for relief of exercised muscles, for soothing muscle and rheumatism pain. It smells like a Christmas tree, and is one of my favorites for pain.

Marjoram

Picture
Marjoram – Yes, we are talking about the herb. Isn’t it cool this has more uses than just cooking. Marjoram falls under the oils to relax muscles and eliminate spasms. It’s basically a natural muscle relaxer without all those unwanted side effects. It is a go to oil for me when it comes to any kind of pain.

Frankincense

Picture
Frankincense – Frankincense is the most power anti-inflammatory oil that you can get. It’s a power house against inflammation. It is an excellent oil to heal and regenerate tissue. It can be really helpful for arthritis pain as well. There is a reason that this oil is called the King of all

Cypress

Picture
Cypress – This is a fantastic oil to help with circulation. When applying, a good rule of thumb is to always rub clockwise in little circles moving up towards the heart. That is the direction that the blood is flowing, so you want to always move towards the heart.
