Unless you are living a stress-free live and having a super healthy gut and therefore a strong immune system you can easily catch a cold or get the flue.

Both are infectious diseases of the respiratory tract (throat, nose, airways, lungs) that share many similar symptoms (e.g. mild fever, nasal congestion or discharge, cough, headache, fatigue), they are distinctly different conditions. Generally speaking, cold symptoms come on slowly and are confined to the nose and throat. Flu symptoms tend to come on faster affecting the nose, throat and chest and may be accompanied by severe body aches and pains, high fever and shivering.

Immune Health - A powerful combination

Medicinal herbs have been used safely and effectively since the time of recorded history. Herbs are still the primary source of health care for 80% of the world. Many of today's wonder drugs were derived from traditional herbal formulations. It is a shame that in order to make huge profits pharmaceutical companies tinker with something so natural.

Combinations of herbs work better than they do singly, because specific combinations allow inclusion of herbs that can work at different aspects and stages of need. Grouping herbs with similar properties means the formulation is more effective, more potent and more useful across a broader spectrum of health challenges.

Let’s look at the 8 ingredients used in Immune Health - our family's "go to" supplement as soon as we feel the beginnings of a sore throat or like we are fighting something off - if you get onto it fast enough - the illness never has a chance to develop - GREAT STUFF!

1. MULLEIN Verbascum spp.
MEDICINAL: Mullein is used as a pain killer and to bring on sleep. Our body heals itself while we sleep, so this is helpful when we are unwell. Mullein loosens mucous, making it useful for treating lung ailments. It also strengthens the lymphatic system. The function of the lymphatic system is really part of the immune system. The lymphatic system helps fight infection in many ways such as:
¨ Helping to make special white blood cells (lymphocytes) that produce antibodies
¨ Having other blood cells called macrophages inside the lymph nodes which swallow up and kill any foreign particles, for example germs.

2. IRISH MOSS Chondrus Crispus
Irish moss has long been recognised for its ability to cure and abate the symptoms of colds and flu, thus it forms an effective barrier to the ills of winter. Irish moss contains potassium chloride, this chemical helps to dissolve catarrhs, which are responsible for the congestion associated with chesty coughs.
The respiratory ailments Irish moss has been reported to alleviate include, sore throats, bronchitis and pneumonia, there are even reports that indicate Irish moss exhibited activity against tuberculosis.

Irish moss also contains several natural antimicrobial and anti viral agents which not only prevents colds and flu's, but Irish moss is reported to eradicate a wide range of infections in sufferers, reducing valuable time lost to the ills we all encounter every day.
Irish moss also contains significant amounts of iodine, the thyroid gland exhibits a requirement for this ion, thus iodine is required for proper thyroid gland function. Iodine plays an important role in our ability to fight disease. Germs can gain access to the blood through cuts in the skin, through the nasal membranes and throat passages, or via the intestinal tract, or practically anywhere there is a rich supply blood close to an external surface. Iodine has a limited antimicrobial role, as blood circulates through the body it passes through the thyroid gland, iodine is secreted in to the blood stream through the thyroid, where it kills many of the weaker germs, whilst weakening some of the stronger germs.

Iodine also has other functions in the body, e.g. it aids in the release of tension, especially nervous tension, which enhances the overall sense of well-being.
Other ailments Irish moss is reported to be effective against include, cancer and radiation poisoning (possibly because of the iodine content of Irish moss), effective against halitosis, inflammation, against dysentery and clears up many bladder complaints.

3. ECHINACEA Echinacea purpurea
MEDICINAL: Echinacea, also known as Purple Coneflower, is a natural antibiotic and immune system stimulator, helping to build resistance to colds, flus, and infections. It increases the production of white blood cells, and improves the lymph glands. This herb is like the function of Interferon, the body's own powerful protein that throws up a remarkably strong wall of resistance to infections. The tea from this herb should be used in all infections, and has been used in treating skin cancers and other cancers. Please note that if you suffer from any auto-immune disorder, you should use Echinacea, or any other immune stimulant herb, only under the guidance of a professional, such as a naturopathic doctor, TCM practitioner, etc.

4. HYSSOP Hysoppus officinalis
MEDICINAL: Hyssop is used in treating lung ailments. The leaves have been applied to wounds to aid in healing. The tea is also used to soothe sore throats. It has been used to inhibit the growth of the herpes simplex virus.

5. ROSEMARY Rosmarinus officinalis
MEDICINAL: The essential oil of Rosemary is used in aromatherapy as an inhalant and decongestant, and to enhance memory and clear concentration. It is also used in lotions to ease arthritis and muscle pain. Rosemary is a stimulant of the circulatory system. It is used to treat bites and stings externally. Internally it is used to treat migraines, bad breath, and to stimulate the sexual organs.
(The inclusion of Rosemary in the VMM formulation may be for its decongestant properties, for relief of muscular aches and pains associated with influenza, to improve the circulation of all the other herbs throughout the body and of course to help with the bad breath associated with illness!!)

6. THYME Thymus spp.
MEDICINAL: Thyme is a powerful antiseptic. It is used in cases of bronchial ailments and intestinal disturbances. It is good for colic and colds. Interestingly it is also used as an antiseptic against tooth decay, and destroys fungal infections as in athlete's foot and skin parasites such as crabs and lice.
(I'd try chewing a VMM if I had toothache or crushing a tablet and making a poultice with Eliminator and applying that to the tooth or to the athlete's foot fungus for that matter!!)

7. HAWTHORN Crataegus oxycantha
MEDICINAL: Hawthorn is effective for curing insomnia. (Good when you are unwell) Hawthorn has been used for centuries in treating heart disease, as regular use strengthens the heart muscles, and to prevent arteriosclerosis, angina, and poor heart action.

8. PANAX GINSENG
Panax ginseng contains compounds known as adaptogens. Adaptogens are believed to be helpful for people dealing with physical and/or emotional stress.
Studies of Western herbal medicine show that panax ginseng's ability to regulate the immune system can assist in the prevention of colds, flu, and some forms of cancer.
All the potential uses of the ginseng root have not been fully explored; however, in both laboratory studies of humans and animals, panax ginseng proved successful in relaxing the muscles of the lungs. By relaxing the muscles of the lungs that control the airway, ginseng may be able to provide some relief for symptoms associated with asthma, constriction of the airways, and other lung diseases.

Hi there! I am Ellen and I’m into all things well-being, self-care, healthy eating, clean living and emotional balance, personal growth.

Let’s be the best and healthiest person we can be!

I love nature and the sunshine, Pilates and Yoga, and of course my little fur baby and my wonderful partner.

My motto is “Health is a Habit and Happiness is a Choice”.

As a well-being advocate I empower health conscious people to make better choices regarding the only two causes of disease: toxicity and deficiency. For example, by reducing our daily toxic load with better food choices and the use of toxin-free personal care products on one side and enhancing nutrition intake on the other side. This and more will significantly improve our life.

As a Psychosomatic Therapist and a Trained John Demartini Method Facilitator I am passionate about empowering people in dissolving any internal or external emotional stress and conflict (toxic emotions) – which when left unresolved will not only hinder us in living our full potential, but also can easily manifest in physical disease.

I enjoy researching, sharing and educating throughout my wellness business and endeavour to provide you helpful information here so you can live a healthy life till old age, feel energetic and can enjoy doing the things you love.

Please leave comments on the blog or drop me a note. Subscribe to my newsletter so you don't miss a thing!
